Zhi Yong Tan

ZhiYong Tan (Yong Tan) is a Malaysia-based composer, arranger, and producer, currently studying music composition in West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He enjoys writing instrumental music, electronic music, vocal work, and song. Yong Tan believes that music can not only carry emotion, but also information. Therefore, his composition often express issue such as environmental issue, social issue like racism, psychology disorder and more.

>Yong Tan’s compositions have been performed publicly in the US and Malaysia. He has received commission for new composition and arrangement for solo, chamber, and orchestra. May 2021, his composition for woodwind quintet has won the Pennsylvania Chamber Winds Call for Score. September 2021, he won the Kyle Pearl 2nd Annual Open Call for cello solo. November 2021, his piano trio “My little Sister ‘asking’ for Present” won the UITM Tunku Zain Piano Trio Composition Competition.

He has also participated in some music festival including 2021 SoundBridge Virtual Festival Malaysia, 2021 Malaysia Young Composer Workshop, 2021 Musical Exchange Program hosted by The Rondo Production.

In high school, he has been appointed as wind orchestra conductor and class choir conductor. He has received awards including best choir conductor and best arranger for choir. Yong also has experience of holding a two-hour concert for wind orchestra. Besides, he has been playing saxophone and piano for more than 12 years.
