Samuel Cho is a pianist, composer and performer of new music. He actively champions works composed by his contemporaries. In 2018 and 2019, he premiered the works written by the Musikakademie Kassel's composition students. Also in 2019, he gave the German premiere of selected pieces from Tyler Kline's piano cycle 'Orchard'. With a fierce curiosity and appetite for experimentation, he is a frequent collaborator in innovative performance formats.
In 2017, for the Hessische Kinder Musiktage, he worked together with the elementary pedagogy class to create a black light performance of Mussorsgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. In 2019, he developed an audiovisual performance titled 'Derive/Thrive' for piano, live electronics and visuals; a performance that takes place in darkness. In this performance, he explores the possibility of new experiences through free improvisation.
As a composer, his works have been performed in New York, London and Kuala Lumpur among others. He has had the privilege of his compositions performed by artists like William Howard, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus' Men's Ensemble and Mei Yi Foo. Firmly believing in open education, he has started several initiatives to create a better understanding and higher exposure for new music.
In 2019, he started an Instagram series tagged #ContemporaryMusicIn60seconds, taking advantage of Instagram's video limit to highlight piano miniatures. He is currently based in Saarbrücken, Germany, pursuing a Masters in New Music Performance at the Hochschule für Musik Saar.
