Johan Othman

Johan Othman was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1969. He graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor Degree in Music Composition and a minor in Music Theory in 1997 and Master of Music in Music Composition from Yale in 1999.

He has written music for three musical theatre productions performed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The Stage (1992), Reunion (1994), and Oh, Brickfields! (1999).  He was a recipient of the Herbert Elwell Prize in Composition given in Oberlin in 1997.

His chamber work Peristalsis was read and performed by the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra in Cleveland USA in 1995.

A finalist of the MPO Composers Forum, he has written three works for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and chamber players: ittar for chamber orchestra (2003), topeng I for large orchestra (2004) and topeng II for 18 musicians (2007).

His set of three songs the dancing mouse for Soprano and Harp based on a poem by William Radice was premiered in Hamburg (2008). The second performance of this piece was at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre on 13 July 2008.

Johan also presented Dying In Order To Live for soprano and piano, an excerpt from Conference of the Birds, at the same event. The opera was eventually staged in Penang.

He is currently teaching music at the School of Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
