Jessica Cho

Jessica Cho completed her MMus in Piano Performance and Composition at the University of Sheffield, UK, in 2011. Her research focusing on 20th century and contemporary piano recital ranged from short works by Schoenberg and Messiaen to her original compositions.

Her works for solo instruments, trio, quartet, chamber ensemble and orchestra, were performed in Sheffield, Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia. She was invited to participate in the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) Forum - ‘Reel Time Composer’ at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in 2011.

Cho was awarded third prize at the Asian Composer League Taiwan’s Young Composers Competition in 2011 with her solo piano piece titled ‘Five Little Pieces for Piano’. In 2012, her chamber work for six players was premiered in Kyoto, Japan.

Cho, a passionate and expressive performer at the piano especially in modern repertoire, is an imaginative composer who enjoys penning short, exciting burst of music as shown in her Five Little Pieces for Piano and Landscape. Her works are a combination of gently flowing lines punctuated by sharp jolts to the senses.

She also pioneered Malaysia's first CD album of women composers in 2016, Interweaves and started the idea of a piano anthology of contemporary local piano works, which bore fruit when the Malaysian Composers Collective published its Freehand Anthology in 2020.

She is working as a music lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA.
