Malaysian women composers hit the Asian stage - Oct 9, Malaysiakini

You can easily find a CD of Beethoven or Mozart in our music stores.
But you will be hard pressed to find a CD of Malaysia's own Mozarts
although we are not short of such talent.

And so when award-winning composer Jessica Cho was interviewed for
Malaysians Kini in January, she said she long dreamed of producing our
very first CD specially for Malaysian women composers.

Her fortunes turned after Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy
read the Malaysians Kini interview, he contacted Cho and offered to
help sponsor her dream project with the aid of Pertubuhan Masyarakat
Sihat Tanpa Alkohol Pulau Pinang.

Last Tuesday the Kuala Lumpur based Cho headed north to Komtar to
launch her CD 'Interweaves', which also features the artwork of Penang
journalist and artist Susan Loone.

Cho said the experience of her lifetime holding a press conference in
the island city was a great excitement.

"There is so many things happening in Penang, in art and culture. And
the government is so supportive.

"It was a real eye opener. It makes me want to further," Cho told
Malaysiakini yesterday.

Her CD features the compositions by award-winning composer Adeline
Wong, who composed her string quartet 'Interweaves', which uses motifs
inspired by the azan, specially for the CD. It also contains music she
composed for the horror film Chermin.

Cho showcases a piano piece that won her the 3rd Prize at the Asian
Composers League young composers competition in Taiwan in 2012, and a
chamber piece Hypnagogic II, whose Kuala Lumpur premiere was cancelled
due to Bersih 3 marching through KLCC on the very day of the concert.

Temple of Fine Arts lecturer Jyotsna Prakash contributes her piece
Sukhi, inspired by the dancer Sukhi Shetty, while Aswara lecturer
Isabella Pek showcases her evocative Jambatan Tamparuli, based on the
Sabahan folk song.

The CD, which aims to take the voice of Malaysian women composers to
greater heights, will be distributed at regular events such as the
talk at Kinokuniya at KLCC yesterday.
